This is not a very well-defined field, since particle physicists are also working here. It is mainly concerned with ultra-relativistic scattering of nuclei from each other, addressing questions about the quark-gluon plasma. It should be nuclear physics, since we consider “dirty” systems of many particles, which are what nuclear physicists are good at.
