    Introduction

To determine how the Sun creates energy, we first need to define what energy is. We will review the different types of energy and reveal the mechanism the Sun uses to produce it. This will require learning more about the atom and the process of fusing nuclei into larger elements.

    Learning Objectives
    • List the different forms of energy
    • Describe the law of conservation of energy
    • Describe how matter can be converted into energy
    • List the particles that make up atoms
    • Describe the nuclear reactions in the solar interior
    • Describe the state of equilibrium of the Sun
    • Describe how energy moves outward through the Sun
    • Define helioseismology and describe what it can tell us about the solar interior
