This content reviews basic concepts from mathematics and science such as scientific notation, units and measurement in the metric system, and problem solving skills. It also introduces special units used in astronomy.
- 0.0: Scientific Notation
- Students will be able to express numbers in scientific notation.
- 0.1: Manipulating Numbers in Scientific Notation
- Students will be able to perform basic math with numbers in scientific notation. Students will be able to use a scientific calculator effectively.
- 0.2: The Metric System
- Students will know the units of distance, time, mass, and temperature in the metric (SI) system. Students will understand the prefixes that may modify these units.
- 0.3: Special Units Used in Astronomy
- Students will know the astronomy-specific units for distance and when to use them: AU , light-years, etc.
- 0.4: Comparing Sizes and Converting Units
- Students will be able to compare two quantities with the same units by using a ratio. Students will be able to convert units, e.g. of distance measure.
- 0.5: Problem Solving and Thinking About Your Answers
- Students will learn a method for numerical problem solving that they will use throughout the modules.
- 0.6: Measurement Accuracy and Uncertainty
- Students will be able to explain the meaning of measurement precisionPrecision: The expected range of uncertainty of a physical measurement. Repeatability of that measurement. Precision differs from accuracy. and sources of error.
