31.3: Perfectly Elastic Collisions

A slightly more difficult situation to analyze is the perfectly elastic collision. In this type of collision, none of the kinetic energy is lost, and so kinetic energy is conserved. 2

Let's begin the analysis of a perfectly elastic collision in one dimension. We begin with two masses m1 and m2 with initial velocities v1i and v2i, respectively. After the collision, the two masses have velocities v1f and v2f. The typical problem is: given the masses and initial velocities, what are the final velocities?

We know the total momentum of the system is conserved, so the sum of the momenta before the collision equals the sum of the momenta after the collision:

But because the collision is perfectly elastic, we know that the kinetic energy is also conserved. This gives us a second equation:

Equations 31.3.2 and 31.3.5 give two simultaneous equations in the two unknown final velocities v1f and v2f :

m1v21i+m2v22i=m1v21f+m2v22f

To solve these equations simultaneously, let's rearrange to put the m1 terms on the left and the m2 terms on the right:

m1(v1iv1f)=m2(v2fv2i)


m1(v21iv21f)=m2(v22fv22i)

Expanding the difference of squares in Eq. 31.3.9, we have

m1(v1iv1f)=m2(v2fv2i)


m1(v1i+v1f)(v1iv1f)=m2(v2f+v2i)(v2fv2i)

Now divide Eq. 31.3.11 by Eq. 31.3.10 to get

v1i+v1f=v2i+v2f

To solve for the final velocities v1f and v2f, we write Eqs. 31.3.6 and 31.3.12 in matrix form:

(m1m211)(v1fv2f)=(m1v1i+m2v2iv1i+v2i)

and solve for the final velocities:

(v1fv2f)=(m1m211)1(m1v1i+m2v2iv1i+v2i)

Let's now expand the matrix inverse as the transposed matrix of cofactors divided by the determinant (Appendix Q):

(v1fv2f)=1m1+m2(1m21m1)(m1v1i+m2v2iv1i+v2i)

=1m1+m2(m1v1i+m2v2im2v1i+m2v2im1v1i+m2v2i+m1v1im1v2i)

=1m1+m2((m1m2)v1i+2m2v2i2m1v1i+(m2m1)v2i)

Thus

v1f=(m1m2m1+m2)v1i+(2m2m1+m2)v2i


v2f=(2m1m1+m2)v1i+(m2m1m1+m2)v2i

Eqs. 31.3.18 and 31.3.19 are the general solution for finding the final velocities in a one-dimensional perfectly elastic collision.
