This textbooks is written for a college level introductory course about the stellar and galactic astronomy, with the assumption that the course has no math or science prerequisites.
The Authors
Rachel Mastrapa, PhD
Rachel has been teaching astronomy at De Anza College since 2019. Before that, she was a research scientist working at NASA Ames and SETI Institute, where she performed experiments simulating ice formation in the outer Solar System. She serves as the asronomy discipline lead for ASCCC OERI.
Caitlin Kepple
Caitlin (they/she pronouns) is an instructor and Department Chair of Astronomy at De Anza College. While in this role, Caitlin has been passionate about mentorship and building community across campus through star parties, events in the Planetarium, and beyond. In their free time, Caitlin enjoys singing in a local LGBTQ+ choir, volunteering, camping under dark skies, and has recently been learning astrophotography.
Science and Society
Each chapter in this textbook ends with a page discussing the interaction of astronomy and human society. Each page discusses a topic related to the chapter content including past and present events with links to more information. These sections are designed to encourage students to think about their own connection to the field of astronomy.
Accessibility
Since astronomy is a visual science, a large part of this project has been ensuring that the textbook meets ADA and WCAG accessibility requirements. Figures have brief alternative text embedded within the image. For more complex figures, there is a link in the figure caption to an accessible description at the end of the chapter. These descriptions are a detailed visual description combined with an overview of the learning outcomes of the figure. Other accessibility features were designed for improving screen reader functionality, including nested headers on each page, tables formatted with headers, limited use of bold or italics, and removal of long text strings such as URLs, with the exception of APA formatted references. Language has been simplified for effective translation and localization.
Libretext
This text is disseminated via the Open Education Resource (OER) LibreTexts Project (https://LibreTexts.org) and like the thousands of other texts available within this powerful platform, it is freely available for reading, printing, and "consuming."
