The study of fluctuations near equilibrium is, in a deep sense, the study of what thermodynamic equilibrium actually is at the level of statistical mechanics. Macroscopic parameters- such as temperature, pressure, and chemical potential-are merely averages that conceal an underlying distribution. The central objective of this field is to determine the character of that distribution, how it evolves in time, and what it reveals about the underlying dynamics of the system. The aim of this book is to discuss some aspects of fluctuations near equilibrium.
