We begin with a more in-depth discussion of work, which was introduced in Chapter 2. Then we get into the heart of this chapter: an introduction to thermodynamics. We define several new state variables, enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs energy, and will work hard at trying to get a useful understanding of these new concepts that are so widely used throughout all of the sciences. Finally, the connection is made between entropy as a state function of thermodynamics and entropy as something that arises.
